2010 Fall Matrix Schedule Released
"The schedule sets up nicely for us. We have a bye right in the middle and our trips out west are seperated fairly. It's all in our hands, but it won't be easy," says President Steve Murray. "I think teams in our Union have proved that the VRU is no joke as far as talent and the ability to play the game is concerned. Virginia placed in the Final Four for the National Championship, Blacksburg is two years removed from the Elite Eight in Nationals and as I look across the board Roanoke will always be solid and the others Blackwater, News and River are all improved and will be better."
The Falcons narrowly missed the playoffs in 2009 after losing in a three way tie-breaker by a try and a conversion kick. The VRU Division III has changed scoring to a Super 14 Points System. Four points are awarded for a win and two points are awarded for a draw. If a team scores four or more trys an additional bonus point is awarded. A point is also awarded to a team that loses by less than seven points. "It's going to be an exciting fall season. It always is. We will be ready to compete hard," Murray added.
2010 FALL MATRIX SCHEDULE
9/11 BLACKWATER (AWAY) 2:00 PM
The Virginia Beach Falcons improved to 13-1 over the last 5 years since the inception of the Tidewater International Tournament. Beach outscored their opponents 82-10 over the three games winning in the Final 19-0 over a strong Second City Troop team. Division 1 Washington won 3rd Place.
"It was just a good day to be Falcon. We have had our struggles this season and we've had some good times as well. For our guys to come out and seize the moment made me very proud, especially since we often are having to reload our talent," said President Steve Murray. "I think we impressed our old boys."
Overall the teams played as one with some great individual efforts. Winger Perry Bowers scored four times in the first round and added another try in the Norfolk game. Prop Brian "Butters" Bidders also made his return from Alaska worth while scoring a try in the semi-final. Three kicks for points put 9 on the board for Scrum Half Tim Falke and Veteran forwards Skip Konhaus and Eric Miller got the two trys in the championship game. Tim Falke also set the single season scoring record for the Falcons racking up 83 points in 9 games.
"The team has great chemistry right now. We're going to move it forward into 7's play and prepare for the Fall Matrix. We will once again contend for the playoffs," Murray added.
